HELP!

Whenever I leave Mr. Rooftops house, I get this error and then the game instantly crashes . D:

Its the only time it happens D:

It looks like Kyme's roof is set to something that doesn't exist. Can you send me your save file? You can share the file over Discord or by email: boxfox.studios@gmail.com

Do you remember what you did before the error? And do you have another working save file? I'll be away for a few days, so won't be able to fix right away.

I just beat this, at close to 100%. (Apparently I'm missing one ring, one crafting material, and two codex entries.)

The combat system is fantastic. Switching partymembers freely is the next best thing to having all of them out at once, and creates some interesting tactical considerations of itself. Switching equipment midfight is really cool, enough that I wish there was a recharge mechanic for that rather than making it once-per-battle. Free enemy analysis, rules reference, and viewable nonrandomized initiative order, are all huge quality-of-life benefits. That last one also makes it clear exactly how much the Agility stat is worth, which it turns out is a lot.

Characters are split. Ezekiel's pretty cool, Umbra's generally a standout, Bolinda's hilarious and I wish the ambiguity about whether her Gang was actually real didn't collapse toward the negative after her fantastic bossfight, Jim Jam was entertaining, Boderick was great, and Sita started as oblivious and separately a bully, but grew on me. Rick was pretty consistently awful, but he had some interesting interactions with Ezekiel, and he kind-of-sort-of grew up a little by the end, maybe, I guess. Brave Wind had potential, but his plotline is almost entirely about killing innocent creatures who talk, and his last line of dialogue is accepting with good grace Umbra being pointlessly mean to him. He'd have been more interesting if he had a bad example to play off of, which Rick could easily have provided. Emith's Zatanna schtick (using phenomenal cosmic powers to fake stage magic) could have said something very interesting about him, but the story never really delved into the requisite worldbuilding for that, and he doesn't really have anything else going on. He's also the only character who plays into most of the damage type system, and that feels like a missed opportunity. Finally, Kyme himself... cares a lot less about having killed Death, or the Excrucian-grade kleptomancy that apparently exists, for someone who moved to a completely different town because his... wife? Girlfriend? Completely blank-slate plot device? - died, than such a person really should. His love of walks and his party-defending combat style were interesting enough, but not enough to make up for being an insensitive skirt-chaser at best, and an adulterer at worst.

A number of fights feel morally reprehensible. Lamia wasn't actually eating children by the time you fight her, first Rat Man encounter is one you can run away from and he isn't obviously breaking in to Macy's house or stealing anything, it very definitely should have been possible to progress the Ruined Keep sidequest without killing the Knight, or at least given some indication that fighting was the Knight's choice rather than the party's. Arana's Den felt kinda bad-faith, given that I literally couldn't avoid fighting and had tried. Fairies did not appear to deserve death, especially for the sake of a single fake resurrection potion, Brave Wind had absolutely no right to murder his way through the beehive, and ending the Illusionist's tea party before at least partaking of crumpets was just rude. He seemed fairly harmless, regardless of how incredibly long his bossfight took.

I loathed the ending. The bad guy's philosophy has huge, glowing weakpoints in the form of every victim whose lives he categorically did not improve, which seems to include the sailors whose boat he stole, the woman whose voice he stole, the Harps whose goddess's favor he stole, the children whose capacity for laughter he stole, and of course the party, whose combat skills he never returns. And because the PCs never properly bring this up, once the Grand Thief has run away, he's won the argument: Kyme goes and seduces Serene, who is married to someone else.
(Serene isn't even an interesting character! Just a jerk too dishonorable to return to her husband or properly divorce him for leaving! Sita and Bolinda are far more entertaining, and if it's just a matter of attraction, Morning Star is obviously hotter!)

It's intensely frustrating. A lot like Jimmy and the Pulsating Mass that way, with which it shares similar strengths and weaknesses.

Thanks for taking the time to write such a detailed comment! Glad to read your thoughts on the characters, as I would love to do another narrative heavy game at some point.

Arana's Den actually had to be patched to force an encounter, because too many players were trying to do a pacifist run and change the outcome.

hopefully you see this and respond. played this on steam, but basically the grand theif quest is kinda broken. i got the chat cutscene in the prison area, but after doing bunch of side quests, nothing appears in the ravenclaw hideout area, no one to talk to, to proceed the quest.

Which step of the quest are you on? Did you get the signed letter from the mayor?

(1 edit)

ahh... I'm on step 1-2.  where do i get that lol. where even is the mayor?

Were you able to continue the quest? Sorry, I was away for 2 weeks.

These are the early steps for that quest:

- Talk to Luciana, the officer in the prison, and she'll ask for more evidence

- Talk to people around town to find 2 more villagers robbed by the Grand Thief (one is in the bar, the other inside the inn)

- Return to Luciana and she'll ask for a signed letter from the mayor. Once this happens, you'll be able to attend the mayor's birthday party. It's the guarded house west of Kyme's

no worries, i got it and was able to basically complete the game... but the real hard part is two achievements- the catalogue 100% one, and the deal 100k damage... aside from that, i suppose the in game quest of flirting with all 12 girls... but i can't find the last one :(

The girls:

  • Sita
  • Umbra
  • Rose
  • Suzume
  • Evette
  • Chelsea
  • Aislinn
  • Macy
  • Luciana
  • Bolinda
  • Melody
  • Mystic Blue
  • Rachelle

From what I remember, you need to trigger a party chat between Rick and Kyme to actually get the achievement.

Yo! I just downloaded the game and it's epic! Quick question though. Is it complete? Or is there an endgame to it?

Thanks!

Yes, the game is complete. There are a few bonus super bosses as the endgame.

Thanks!

Hey, I found this game in Steam and love it, I just came here asking for help, I got stuck when Ezequiel and the blue hair guy fall once they break a lock near a cave. I don't know how to get out from the second floor where they are arrow moving them in to the same place.

by the way LOVE THE GAME, my favourite, I'm just newbie in here, and yeah, I make the account for this. c:

Glad you're enjoying the game :)

One of our community members made a great guide for that dungeon:  https://kiyoshiroritsu.wordpress.com/2022/10/01/notes-from-province-walkthrough/...

Thank you!!! But I got stuck where Ezequiel it's supposed to Jump, I read the article you sent but how Can I move Ezequiel from those arrow that bring me back to where I already am? :s

You mean the two downward facing arrows near the bottom? From the bottom middle part, you can go left -> up -> jump to get past the arrows.

Don't worry, I solved it! good think there was an autosave!

I finish that :3

im downloading it now
thanks for spending your time help me :)))

it's worked
thank you so much :)))

how do you make this game work with a generic controller?

(+1)

You can press F1 and click on gamepad to modify the controls. If it isn't working, you can try a driver update.

This is the first time I have commented since I used itch. I like this game very much. I use translation software to comment. I come from China. Although my English is poor, I like this game very much. I like jrpg games. It's a little hard to play games with translation software. I have a few problems: my team is only level 10, only the protagonist, priest and Boxer. I found Duke only after the progress of the game. I found that I hadn't met CYL for a long time after the ice cave exploration. My team can't beat Grimm and Luciana. Spiders in MT Verner are hard to deal with. The army of rats and men under the farm beat me to pieces. I don't even have the money to buy things from the priest. As he said, I am a poor man. I think the game is a little difficult to continue. I miss CYL. She didn't fight when she met. We went to drink together. Now where has she gone.

(+1)

Thanks for commenting! Glad you're able to play the game even though it's in English.

Keep exploring and your characters will level up, then you can beat everything. Somethings to try for extra EXP at your level: the caves in Mt Verner, Coliseum challenge and standard battles, and the zombies in the graveyard at night.

Cyl doesn't visit often, but when she does, you can find her outside Kyme's house.

Hello! Me again. So I feel kind of stuck again. I’ve done everything I could for now except for 2 things. I need to beat Umbra’s father and find a way to get through the Sun and moon path which is blocked by that Harpy. Not sure how to get through? Must be a level thing like the dragon in the cave I beat earlier. Anyways I cannot beat Umbras dad. I’ve done literally everything else. Beat every single enemy in every cave and in all 3 islands. Opened every chest. With the guild, got the platinum title. (Going for the diamond now). So I’m stuck. Umbras dad is an almost insta kill with his massive lightning magic damage that hits the whole party. Keeping my heroes alive is a task on its own so much that I have no time to deal him any damage other than the counter and magic reflect. Not to mention he sucks the health out with life syphon + poison and I only have one item that protects from poison. Can you help with the strategy here and also is there another way to open the Sun/moon path. I’ve tried talking to everyone, giving them all gifts and nothing seems to trigger it. What am I missing? Umbras dad can’t be the trigger can he? And if he is I sure as hell can’t beat the guy.  Since you usually don’t respond till the next day due to probably time zones, I may even find a way to beat him by then and if I do, I’ll edit the comment!

A few people have gotten stuck on the sun and moon path. The way it works is the party has to think through the clues while doing something else. If you've already done everything else in the game, then there's nothing left to move that dialog chain forward. There have been a few players who were in the same situation, but they managed to find something else to do to unlock the next step. I need to redesign this part. Maybe beating the diamond tournament will be enough "progress" to trigger the next scene.

Umbra's father is one of the most difficult battles. If you can beat him, there's only 1-2 battles left that can challenge you.

He has a lot of healing from life siphon and the healing skeletons he summons. This can be countered with a well timed use the Zombie Flesh accessory to reverse healing.

Ultimately, the party should be level 60-70. There's a few more bosses locked behind the story that will level the party up.

Here's a video of a player doing 100k+ damage in a single turn. Their build can give inspiration on how to deal more damage too.

(1 edit)

Yea my party is only level 52 and the most I can survive is get Umbras dad bellow 30%HP but I haven’t managed any further. Diamond tournament is also difficult due to the dragon that summons a lot of other enemies..:but there is literally nothing and no one else left to fight other than random monsters on the map. So I’m really not sure what to do at this point. I’ll check the video! Thank you!

I'm working on a patch for the place you're stuck. It'll take a bit, but should be out in the next 24 hours.

(1 edit)

Thanks! I left a little donation as a thank you for being fast and for responding to comments! Do tell me can I just apply the patch to my game or will I need to start all over again from the beginning?

Edit: I just moved a save file to the newly installed game and it worked!! I went through the Sun and moon path! Thanks again!

That's awesome, thanks for donating! You can just apply the patch to your game :)

I got stuck here. I can't face upwards without making a platform , so I can't jump upwards.

Can you jump left and send the zombie upwards? Then you should be able to walk past.

Hello! Ive been playing this game obsessively last few days. I can’t express how much I love it! However I’ve been pulled into this magic world once I’ve gotten the magician to join me after beating Lamia and there seems to be no way out of there other than beating the 4 magic orbs next to the statue. I cannot beat them and am therefore soft locked in this little area. Is there any advice as to what strategy to use to defeat them or is there a way out of the magic world that bypasses the fight? I die in a record time.

Sorry to hear you got stuck! I was very careful to make the encounter feel challenging without having a risk of players getting soft locked there. Guess I wasn't careful enough!

What level are your characters? If you're strong enough to beat the Lamia, those magic orbs should be beatable.

Earlier in the area, there's some water that fully restores HP, so make sure to heal up for free. In battle, you can use the Enemy Scan ability under Info to figure out the elemental weakness of the orbs, and use the magician to hit the weakness for extra damage.

Some good accessories for protecting against magic damage: Emerald Gem, Aquamarine Gem, Spirit Charm. Hopefully you've found some of them on your journey.

Let me know if you're able to beat the encounter. I may need to make that section of the game more forgiving.

They’re all level 15. And I have all the items you mentioned above but I still can barely kill one of the orbs. I didn’t expect to be pulled here so I wasn’t stacked up on healing items since beating Lamia ate them all. It’s really frustrating me. Is there another character I can recruit before the magician so I at least have an extra character in the battle?

Edit; I ended up going back to an earlier save before I fought Lamia and I proved my strength to Luciana and recruited a new character. So for now I’ll give up on the magician cause the orbs are impossible to beat.

Edit 2: I finally went back and beat Lamia again which was rather easy with the gunman thief. The way I beat the orbs was by stacking up on breads and antidotes and then using other 3 members not to attack but to keep the mage alive so that he can deal the damage. Got rid of the fire and water ones first cause they attack first and the rest was easy. But I couldn't have done it without 20+ breads and antidotes. :,)

Glad you beat the fight! There's actually bonus dialog for watching the magic show with the thief in the party.

Thank you for responses!!! I’m enjoying this game so much and ever since playing a game called Casia which was similar to this, I’ve been looking for the similar open world adventure. I even like this one better! The thing I appreciate is that there are no invisible enemies like in 99% of these RPG games. You know when you walk and randomly get pulled into a fight? Here I can just avoid the enemies if I don’t feel like fighting by stealthing around them and I can’t express how much I love this.

Hello! This game singlehandedly made me sign up for an itch.io account just so I could post a comment. This is a very well-made game and I could make an entire review on it, but what I'm really here for is to say this: My GOD, I really HATE this game sometimes!! (I still love it, don't worry). I just wanna say that some fights can be frustrating (but still mostly manageable and even fun as a challenge) but one boss fight in the main storyline that I have not been able to forgive is the lich fight. That guy can LITERALLY insta-kill! Seriously, you can't even defend against it with invincible... And btw, is it even possible to defeat the masked dude? The 5 angels boss fight? What level is your recommendation for that fight?

Also, one last thing: There are a lot of wall decorations, but not enough "wall" to put them on most of the time. It would be nice to get a second floor.

Glad you signed up to comment :)

Masked dude is balanced for level 60-70. Make sure you're geared up too. If you haven't found them, there are 7 Miracle Rings, one for each character, and also 7 unique end game armors.

Second floor on the house is a good idea! Hadn't thought about it before, but definitely something to include in the game.

Hi! Would it be possible to still get the Notes From Developer booklet if I've donated two separate instances? Thanks! Whenever I think the story is finished, there's always a surprise around the corner.

I sent a link on Twitter that will let you download it. Let me know if it works!

I've played this game for over 30 hours now, all I really have left to do is 3 super bosses I can't seem to crack. Very happy to have found a genuinely good rpg maker game that's actually an rpg.

Happy to hear it! When developing the game, I never thought anyone would reach the end.

100% if the todo list is anything to go by. Saddens me to see how buried this game is. Good look in spreading it around!

This game is awesome! Didn’t expect to find such a gem in both gameplay and story. I’ve been playing for, say, 15 hours and yet this game still manages to stay fresh! The chat between party members, fishing, and housing element are really nice additions that make this game more well-rounded than your usual rpg. Not to mention the non-linear advancement in the plot/areas. Looking forward to supporting this project/others in the future (and hopefully join a discussion for this game since there’s just so much to rave about)!

Glad you're enjoying the game! Comments like this really motivate me to stick to game dev :)

I press c and my kyme isn't jumping :<<<<

(+1)

If you use shift it will work

(+1)

Thanks for the bug report! It's surprisingly tricky to fix, but I should have a patch out soon.

In the meantime, you can press Shift instead of C like Ciowastaken suggested. This works in the music minigame as well.

thank you

There's a cave to the right of Bree Tree Ruins. The Obsessive Slither in that cave attacks my Kyme who has odd-numbered HP. Kyme had on his invicible defense. Now, the snake's attack did not stop and it went on and on and on forever. At this point, the snake is too obsessive I can do nothing but to shut down and re-enter.

That snake is always causing trouble. I've already fixed two infinite loops with him before involving Counter and Cover.

Thanks for the bug report! I'll have it fixed in the next patch.

can you jump longer?

There's no way to jump longer or upgrade the jump.

(+1)

This game is insane! I really like the non-linear aspect of meeting new people and doing quests for them and getting some story or plot along the way! Eve though i recorded almost a tiny fraction of the overall game, I really would like to go back to it and explore this massive world you created! I hope you continue making games like this because this is really fun!

Thanks for the kind words and video! It means a lot :)
